How to say “if” in Mandarin Chinese (from Learn Chinese Now)

on Apr 12, 2017

For whatever reason, the only form of “if” I knew prior to watching this Learn Chinese Now video was rǔgǔo (如果). I was also unfamiliar with the 的话 particle along with the yàoshi (要是) “if”.

The following sentences should all mean, “If you have time, please call me,” but vary in their formality:

如果你有时间的话,请给我打电话。rǔgǔo nǐ yǒu shíjiān dehùa, qǐng gěi wǒ dǎ diànhùa.

如果你有时间,请给我打电话。rǔgǔo nǐ yǒu shíjiān, qǐng gěi wǒ dǎ diànhùa.

你有时间的话,请给我打电话。nǐ yǒu shíjiān dehùa, qǐng gěi wǒ dǎ diànhùa.

要是你有时间,请给我打电话。yàoshi nǐ yǒu shíjiān, qǐng gěi wǒ dǎ diànhùa.
